Sofwave Skin Tightening SKINtervention by Dr. Zoë Indigo, MD

Lift, firm, and tighten.  No needles, no surgery, no downtime, and no compromises for melanin-rich skin.

If you’ve been noticing a softer jawline, a little looseness under the chin, or skin that just doesn’t sit as firmly as it used to you’re not imagining it, and you’re not out of options. Sofwave is an FDA-cleared ultrasound treatment that teaches your skin to rebuild its own collagen (the protein scaffolding that keeps skin firm and lifted). At SKIN/tervention, it’s performed by a board-certified dermatologist who understands exactly how to treat every skin tone safely because your glow-up should never come with a side of risk.

What Is Sofwave?

Sofwave uses focused ultrasound energy, sound waves, not lasers and not needles, delivered to the mid-layer of your skin, right where collagen and elastin are made.

The gentle heat signals your skin to start a natural repair process. Over the following weeks, your body builds fresh collagen and elastin (the fibers that give skin its bounce and snap-back). The result: skin that looks lifted and firmer, gradually and naturally.

Sofwave is FDA-cleared for:

  • Improving fine lines and wrinkles on the face
  • Lifting the eyebrow area
  • Lifting and firming lax skin under the chin and on the neck
  • Improving skin laxity (looseness) on the upper arms
  • Improving the appearance of acne scars
  • Short-term improvement in the appearance of cellulite

A session typically takes 30–45 minutes, and you can go right back to your day, dinner reservations, workout, school pickup, all of it.

Is Sofwave Safe for Dark Skin?

Yes! And this matters more than most treatment pages will tell you.

Many energy-based treatments (certain lasers especially) target pigment, which means melanin-rich skin can be at higher risk for burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the dark marks left behind after skin is irritated or injured.

Sofwave works differently. Its ultrasound energy bypasses the surface of the skin entirely and delivers heat only to the mid-dermis, without targeting pigment at all. That’s why it’s cleared for all skin types and tones, including deeply melanated skin.

At SKIN/tervention, skin of color isn’t an afterthought. Dr. Zoë has published medical research on hyperpigmentation and built this practice around safe, effective treatment for every shade. If you’ve ever been told a tightening treatment “isn’t for your skin,” this is the one that is.

Sofwave vs. Ultherapy: What’s the Difference?

Both use ultrasound to stimulate collagen, but they don’t feel the same.

  • Depth: Ultherapy delivers energy in deeper, single points. Sofwave treats the mid-dermis, the collagen-making layer, in broader, parallel beams.
  • Comfort: Sofwave sessions are generally described as far more comfortable, and we use a numbing cream beforehand to keep you at ease.
  • Time: Most Sofwave sessions are done in 30–45 minutes.
  • Skin tones: Both are non-laser technologies, but Sofwave’s design and safety data across all skin types is a major reason it has become our tightening treatment of choice.

The best way to know which approach fits your face, your skin, and your goals? A consultation, that’s what we’re here for.

Sofwave vs. XERF: Dr. Zoë’s Honest Take

You may have seen XERF all over your feed lately. It’s a new radiofrequency device (radio-wave energy that heats tissue to trigger collagen) designed to reach deeper structural layers of the face. The technology is genuinely interesting, and I’m watching it closely.

But here’s my honest professional take on where things stand today:

  • Track record. Sofwave has years of published research, multiple FDA clearances, and hundreds of thousands of treatments performed, including well-established safety across all skin tones. XERF is newer, and the body of long-term, peer-reviewed data is still growing.
  • The depth question. Deep-heating radiofrequency technologies have historically raised concerns about unintended volume loss, meaning loss of the healthy facial fat that keeps your face looking full and youthful. Whether XERF avoids this is actively debated among dermatologists, and I want to see more long-term data across diverse skin before I stake my patients’ faces on it.
  • What that means at SKIN/tervention. I’m not counting XERF out as the evidence matures, it may earn a place in our practice down the line. But when it comes to what I offer my patients right now, Sofwave is the superior choice in my professional opinion: proven, comfortable, tone-inclusive, and collagen-first without touching the fat that belongs on your face.

New devices launch every year. My job is to bring you the ones that have earned it.

Skin Tightening After Weight Loss (Including GLP-1 Medications)

Losing weight, whether through lifestyle changes or medications like semaglutide (GLP-1s) — can leave skin looking deflated, especially in the face, jawline, and neck. You may have heard it called “Ozempic face.”

Here’s what’s happening: rapid weight loss reduces the fat that supported your skin, while the collagen underneath hasn’t caught up. The skin is left a little loose, a little hollow.

Sofwave targets exactly the layer where collagen is rebuilt, helping firm and lift the areas weight loss left behind, no surgery, no filler required (though they can be combined when it makes sense for you).

If you’re on a weight-loss journey and want your face to reflect how good you feel, let’s talk about a plan.

What to Expect at Your Sofwave Appointment

  • Consultation first. Dr. Zoë examines your skin, listens to your goals, and confirms Sofwave is the right fit, or tells you honestly if something else would serve you better.
  • Numbing cream goes on for about 30–45 minutes so you stay comfortable.
  • The treatment itself takes roughly 30–45 minutes depending on the areas treated. You’ll feel warmth as the ultrasound does its work.
  • Right after: possible mild redness or puffiness that typically settles within hours. Makeup is fine. Your regular life resumes immediately.
  • Results build over time. Collagen remodeling happens over about 12 weeks, with continued improvement as your skin rebuilds. Many patients treat once and refresh as needed.

Sofwave FAQ

How much does Sofwave cost?

Pricing depends on the areas treated and your personalized plan. We’ll go over everything transparently at your consultation — no surprises. SKIN/tervention Membership savings and financing options are available.

How many Sofwave sessions will I need?

Many patients see improvement after a single session, with results building over about 12 weeks as collagen rebuilds. Depending on your skin and goals, Dr. Zoë may recommend a follow-up session — you’ll get an honest, personalized plan at your visit.

Is Sofwave safe for darker skin tones?

Yes. Sofwave’s ultrasound energy doesn’t target pigment, which makes it FDA-cleared and safe for all skin types and tones, including melanin-rich skin. It’s one of the reasons we chose it for our practice.

Does Sofwave hurt?

Most patients find it very tolerable. We apply numbing cream before treatment, and you’ll feel warmth rather than the intensity associated with older ultrasound treatments.

Is there any downtime?

No real downtime. You might have mild redness or puffiness for a few hours. You can return to work, workouts, and makeup right away.

Do you offer XERF?

Not currently. XERF is a newer radiofrequency device, and Dr. Zoë prefers to see more long-term safety and efficacy data — especially across all skin tones — before adding a technology to the practice. For non-surgical tightening today, Sofwave is our treatment of choice. Read Dr. Zoë’s full comparison above.

How is Sofwave different from a laser?

Lasers use light, which can interact with pigment in the skin. Sofwave uses ultrasound — sound waves that pass safely below the surface to the collagen-making layer. That’s what makes it tone-inclusive. (Curious about lasers that ARE safe for dark skin? See our Hollywood Spectra page.)
